The
Division of State Police is
responsible for rendering police services to all the people of New York
State. There are approximately 4,000 men and women working throughout 11
Troop areas. With the exception of Troop NYC, Troop T (Thruway Troop), and
Troop L (Long Island), each Troop is specifically responsible for policing
approximately eight to 10 counties. In 1935, a Detective Force was created
to be responsible for the investigation of all major crimes; this unit is
now known as the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
