PER SCHOLAS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Organization Directory Page

Per Scholas Institute of Technology is a non-profit social venture dedicated to using technology to improve the lives of people in low-income communities. Operating in the South Bronx, the Institute’s vocational training, computer distribution and recycling programs work together to empower children and help adults build living-wage careers.

Per Scholas was founded in 1995 by a consortium of corporations and foundations. Its name, derived from the Latin phrase "for schools," reflects the organization's dedication to technology education and putting computer equipment and knowledge into the hands of disadvantaged students, families and the schools and organizations that serve them. Students arrive from a myriad of backgrounds, yet all have the same desire, to be successful and gainfully employed in their chosen field.

The fifteen-week, full-time Computer Technician Training Program combines classroom and hands-on experience with an on-the-job internship in the IT offices of local businesses and corporations. The curriculum covers the assembly, configuration, installation, upgrade and repair of personal computers, printers and copiers as well as the design, installation and troubleshooting of networks. Instruction prepares students to sit for the A+ certification examination, the industry standard for advancement in this field.

Students also attend life-skills workshops with a primary focus on developing interviewing and communication skills, building the student’s resume, and honing job search strategies. Career placement officers arrange interviews with local employers, who contact Per Scholas because of its reputation for producing high quality technicians. One lasting impression that Per Scholas wishes students to take away from their experience is to pass on the good will; thus, students complete several hours of community service while attending Per Scholas.
